The five best Greek islands for honeymoon
1. Santorini — the obvious one
Santorini is honeymoon shorthand because it works. The caldera, the white villages, the sunsets, the cave-suite hotels — they're real, they deliver, they're exactly the experience the photos promise. The downside: it's also full of other honeymooners. Especially in May-September. Book 60-90 days ahead.
Best for: Couples wanting the iconic experience, photographers, romance-as-aesthetic.
2. Milos — Santorini's quieter cousin
Milos is volcanic but in a different way — white moon-rock formations, sea caves you reach by boat, beach diversity Santorini lacks. About 40% cheaper than Santorini for similar quality hotels. The boat trip to Kleftiko sea caves is one of the great romantic Greek experiences. Honeymoon-perfect for couples wanting quiet luxury.
3. Paros — the underrated choice
Paros is what we recommend most often to non-photographer honeymooners. Real Cycladic village (Naoussa), genuinely good food, sandy beaches with shallow turquoise water, half the price of Santorini, no honeymoon-industrial-complex. You can have a real Greek experience with your partner instead of a series of poses for Instagram.
4. Crete — for honeymoons longer than 7 days
Crete works for longer honeymoons because it has variety — beaches, mountains, ancient sites, food. Chania (the Venetian old town in the west) is romantic at sunset. The southern coast has hidden coves. Cretan food is the best in Greece.
5. Corfu — for honeymoons wanting different Greece
Corfu doesn't look like postcard Greece — it looks like Italy met Greece had a beautiful child. Venetian fortresses. Italian colonnades. Lush green forests. Best for couples who've already done the Cyclades or want a Greek honeymoon that doesn't look like everyone else's photos.
The perfect 7-day Greek honeymoon
Most honeymoons last 7-10 days. Here's the optimal 7-day structure we book most often:
- Days 1-2: Athens. Arrival recovery. Acropolis (1 morning). Romantic dinner in Plaka. Sunset at Cape Sounion (Temple of Poseidon).
- Days 3-6: Santorini (or Paros). Caldera-view hotel. Wineries one afternoon. Sunset at Imerovigli (less crowded than Oia). Boat trip around the caldera. Slow mornings, late breakfasts, nothing rushed.
- Day 7: Fly home from Santorini. Don't ferry back — tired of carrying luggage.
Total cost (mid-range, peak season, 2 people, 4-star caldera-view hotel + Athens 4-star, all-in including transfers): €4,400-5,800. Premium 5-star upgrade: €7,000-12,000. Off-season: €2,800-3,800.
When to honeymoon in Greece
The right month depends on what you want.
- May — best weather + value combo. Hotel rates 40% below summer. Sea is cool but everything else is perfect. Wildflowers everywhere.
- June — peak honeymoon month. Warm sea, summer feel, manageable crowds. Most popular for honeymoon bookings.
- July-August — peak everything. Honeymoons happen but you're competing for restaurant tables and sunset spots with thousands of others. Skip if you want quiet.
- September — the locals' favorite month. Warmest sea of the year. Hotel rates dropping. Crowds halved. Many honeymooners we send specifically choose September.
- October — last real summer month. Half-price luxury. Sea still warm in southern islands. Great for budget-conscious honeymoons.
