Corfu doesn't look like the rest of Greece. Italian Venetian architecture in the old town. Lush green forests. British colonial palaces. Larger, wetter, more European. If you've already done the Cyclades, or want a Greek experience that doesn't look like Instagram Greece, Corfu is the answer.
Repeat Greece visitors, history enthusiasts, walkers, families, travelers wanting non-Cycladic Greece
May–October. Sweet spot: June, September. Peak: July-August (still less crowded than Cyclades)
4–6 days
Italian-Venetian, green and lush, culturally distinct
Corfu was Venetian for 400 years, then briefly British, then finally Greek. The result is an island that doesn't fit anywhere else's idea of Greece. The capital Corfu Town has Venetian fortresses, Italianate stone buildings, and the only cricket pitch in Greece (the British left it). The countryside is green and forested, full of olive groves planted by the Venetians 500 years ago.
Corfu is the most northwestern Greek island, at the mouth of the Adriatic. It rains more here than anywhere else in Greece. Spring brings wildflowers. Summer is hot but not as dry as the Aegean. The island is bigger than most Cyclades — driving from north to south takes 90 minutes. There are 200+ villages, each with its own character.
For a Greek island that feels European, has a unique architectural identity, and offers different experiences (lush walking, historic sites, classical concerts in summer), Corfu is unmatched. It works especially well for travelers who've already done Mykonos and Santorini and want something different next.
Venetian fortresses, Italian-style colonnades, the Esplanade square, the British-era cricket ground. UNESCO World Heritage.
Empress Sissi of Austria's summer residence. Neoclassical, surrounded by gardens. Half-day.
The most photographed spot in Corfu — sea-cut cliffs, monastery, blue water coves. Boat trips to nearby caves.
Highest point on Corfu. Drive to the summit for panoramic views; clear days you see Albania.
Kassiopi (Venetian harbor village), Acharavi, Sidari (Canal d'Amour). The classic British holidaymaker scene.
Corfu has 4 million olive trees. Some 500 years old. Working olive oil mills offer tastings — distinctive Corfiot oil, peppery, complex.
Fly: The fastest way. Athens to Corfu: 1 hour, €60-110 one-way. Aegean Airlines and Sky Express daily.
Ferry from Athens: Not direct. You'd need to drive to Igoumenitsa (5 hours from Athens) and ferry from there (90 minutes). Or train Athens to Patras, drive to Igoumenitsa.
From Italy: Direct ferries from Italy (Bari, Brindisi, Venice, Ancona) to Corfu — popular for combined Greece-Italy trips.
Architecturally and culturally. Corfu was Venetian for 400 years, then British. The old town has Italian colonnades, not Greek whitewash. The countryside is green and forested. The cuisine has Italian and Albanian influences. It rains more. It's bigger. It feels European in a way most Greek islands don't.
Some parts heavily — northern beach resorts (Sidari, Kavos, Acharavi) are British package-tour territory. Other parts barely — mountain villages, southern coast, the inland of the island. Corfu Town itself is busy in summer but maintains its own identity. Pick your accommodation carefully and you can choose your level of tourism.
Both are big, diverse, year-round islands. Corfu is greener, wetter, more European-feeling, has more historic architecture. Crete is bigger, drier, has more dramatic landscapes, better food. They serve different travelers — Corfu for European-style cultural travelers, Crete for active food-and-history travelers.
Most rainfall is October-March. Summer (June-September) is dry and warm — but Corfu is greener than other Greek islands because of more annual rainfall. Even in July-August, expect occasional brief showers. Pack a light raincoat that you probably won't need.
Excellent. Family-friendly beach resorts on the north coast are designed for it. Plenty to do beyond beach — Achilleion Palace, the old fortress, Aqualand water park. Sandy beaches with shallow water are common, especially on the northwest coast.
