Flat €58. English-speaking driver with a name sign at arrivals. No meter games, no extra-luggage charges, no "card machine broken" excuses. Booked direct.
I've been working in Athens tourism for 25 years. These scams happen every single day to tourists who land tired, jet-lagged, and unfamiliar with Greek law. Here's what to know.
Driver insists on running the meter "because it's faster." Meter mysteriously runs at double speed, ends at €100+ for a €40 ride. The driver claims night surcharge or zone change.
You agree to €40, then at drop-off the driver demands an extra €5-10 per bag. This isn't legal — luggage is included in the flat rate.
"Your hotel is closed/full/has issues — let me take you to my friend's hotel instead." This is a kickback scam — they get a commission from the alternate hotel.
You agree to pay by card. At drop-off, "the machine is broken" — driver demands cash from a nearby ATM, walks you there, pockets a markup.
You hand over €50, driver palms it and shows you a €5 note instead. "You only gave me €5, sir." Classic sleight-of-hand on tired travelers.
Unmarked black car offers "private transfer to Athens, €30, very cheap!" These aren't licensed. They charge €100+ at drop-off and there's zero recourse.
By Greek law, all licensed taxis must charge a flat rate from Athens International Airport (ATH) to anywhere in the Athens city center. Drivers are not allowed to use the meter for this route, regardless of what they tell you.
Anything more than this is not "extra fees" or "surcharges" — it's overcharging. You can refuse, request a receipt, and report the driver to the airport tourist police if needed.
What's actually different between the four ways to get from Athens airport to the city. We'll be honest about when each one makes sense.
The honest answers — including the things other airport transfer companies won't tell you.
Most are fine. Athens taxis are mostly run by independent drivers, and the majority are honest. But airport taxis specifically have a worse reputation — the airport is the highest-tourist-volume location in Greece, so it attracts the few drivers who are willing to scam. The 6 scams above are documented and common. Pre-booking removes the risk entirely.
By Greek law: €40 daytime (5 AM – midnight) and €55 nighttime (midnight – 5 AM) from Athens International Airport to anywhere in the Athens city center. To Piraeus port it's €60. These rates include up to 4 passengers and standard luggage. No legal surcharges for bags, extra passengers, or holidays exist for this route.
Honest answer: If you're a confident traveler with no luggage and good Greek/English skills, an official yellow taxi from the rank works. If you have kids, lots of luggage, language concerns, or you're arriving at 2 AM tired and jet-lagged, pre-booking is worth €18 over the taxi rate. Welcome Pickups is fine but charges €10 extra for child seats — we don't.
Uber technically operates in Athens but only as a connection to licensed taxis (not the same as Uber elsewhere — same flat rates apply). Beat is the local equivalent and works similarly. Both have the same risks as flagging a taxi: surge pricing, language barriers, no meet-and-greet at arrivals, and no flight tracking if you're delayed.
The Metro Line 3 from ATH to Syntagma is €9 per person and takes 40 minutes. Best option if you have light luggage, no kids, and aren't exhausted. The Metro stops several times and the carriages get crowded. For 2 adults, Metro = €18 vs €40 taxi — meaningful savings. For 4 adults with bags, taxi/transfer wins.
Pre-booked transfers (including ours) track your flight automatically. If your flight lands 2 hours late, the driver waits — no extra charge. Taxi drivers don't track flights, so if you're late, you re-queue at the rank. Welcome Pickups also tracks. This is the single biggest reason to pre-book if you have a long-haul flight.
Pre-booked drivers wait in the arrivals hall, just past customs, holding a sign with your name printed on it. We'll send you a photo of your driver and the exact meeting point the morning of your arrival via the form. If anything is unclear, you call us — not a call center, an actual person (Stelios).
Standard sedan fits 4 passengers + 4 bags. For larger groups we use a Mercedes V-Class minivan (up to 7 passengers + luggage) at €75 flat. For 8+ passengers, we use a Sprinter van. Just put the group size in the booking form and we send the right vehicle.
Yes — booster seats and full car seats available for free. Other transfer services charge €10 per seat. Just specify the child's age in the booking notes and we'll have the right seat in the car. Greek law requires child seats for kids under 12 and shorter than 1.35m.
Same flat rate, same vehicle, same service. Most clients book both legs at once — we coordinate the return time based on your departure flight. We pick you up 3 hours before international flights, 2 hours before domestic.
Cash to the driver in euros (preferred), or pre-pay by secure card link before arrival. No card machine in the car — that's been the source of too many scams in Athens. Wire transfer also possible for corporate bookings.
Yes — free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours, 50% charge. Inside 6 hours or no-show, 100% (because the driver is already on the way). If your flight is canceled by the airline, we cancel free regardless of timing.
Submit the form, get confirmation in 30 minutes, receive your driver's photo and direct email the morning of arrival.
Tell me about your trip. I'll reply within 30 minutes (during Greek hours) with a custom quote — direct supplier prices, no OTA markup.
