What October Greece actually feels like
The first thing you notice: the air. October light in Greece is different than summer light. Crisp. Clear. Sharp shadows. The white villages look whiter. The blue sea looks bluer. The mountains, which spent August disappearing in heat haze, become visible again — you can see Mount Parnassus from the Acropolis, you can see the Peloponnese coast from Sounion.
The second thing: the pace. By October 1, the country has clearly downshifted. Greeks have returned from islands. School is back. Athens kafenios refill with locals. Tour buses thin to a trickle. You walk into a Plaka taverna at 9 PM on a Wednesday and the owner remembers you from your last visit.
The third thing: the prices. October is when hotels run their best deals to fill the last weeks before closing. A €450/night Santorini caldera-view hotel in August might list €180/night the third week of October. A €130/night central Athens 4-star runs €75. The math of October Greece is genuinely different from any other month.

Where to go in October Greece
October Greece divides into "still works" and "wait until next year." Knowing which is which is critical:
Excellent in October
- Athens: Best sightseeing month of the year. Cool walking weather, full restaurants, full cultural calendar.
- Mainland tours (Meteora, Delphi, Olympia, Argolis): Best month — clear views, autumn colors, comfortable walking, half-price hotels in tour villages.
- Crete: Still summer in the south. Beaches at Elafonisi, Falassarna, Balos still warm. Greek family vacationers are gone.
- Rhodes: Knights of St. John old town in October light is magical. Beaches still swimmable.
- Athens Riviera (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni): Beaches still warm enough to swim, restaurants still full, prices much lower.
Mixed in October
- Santorini: Workable through October 20. Most hotels open early-October but begin closing mid-October. Sunsets still spectacular. Swimming questionable.
- Mykonos: First two weeks ok. Most beach clubs closed by October 1. Most boutique hotels close October 10-15. Late October feels post-apocalyptic.
- Paros, Naxos: Quiet, beautiful, but most hotels close mid-month.
Skip in October
- Small Cyclades (Folegandros, Sikinos, Anafi, Donoussa): mostly closed by October 15.
- Northern Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos): cooling fast, ferries reduced.
- Beach-club-dependent vacations: October is too late for the party energy.
The October sweet spot is October 5-20. The first week feels like a quiet September. October 5-20 is when prices have fully dropped, weather is still mostly summer, and most things you'd want to do are still open. Past October 20, you're traveling in Greece's actual off-season — beautiful in its own way but committed to a different experience.
The October budget itinerary
