Best Greek destinations for couples
Different couples want different things from a trip. Here's what each Greek destination delivers:
For pure romance: Santorini or Milos
Santorini delivers iconic romance — caldera-edge dinners, the famous sunset, cave suites. Milos delivers the same energy at 40% lower cost, with sea-cave boat trips that Santorini can't match. Pick Santorini for the photos and the iconic experience; Milos for quieter intimacy.
For "real Greece" couples: Paros or Naxos
Couples who don't want the honeymoon-industrial-complex but still want the Cycladic experience. Naoussa village in Paros at sunset, dinner at a fishing harbor taverna, no other couples doing the exact same thing as you.
For active couples: Crete
Big enough for variety. Hike Samaria Gorge together. Beach days at Elafonisi (pink sand). Dinner in Chania's Venetian harbor. Cretan food is the best in Greece.
For city couples: Athens + island
2 nights in Athens (Acropolis, Plaka dinner, Cape Sounion sunset) + 4 nights on an island. Athens is romantic in a different way than the islands — historical, intellectual, cosmopolitan. The combo gives you both modes.
For weekend escapes: Skiathos or Hydra
Quick flights from Athens. Hydra has no cars — donkey-and-foot transit makes it instantly romantic. Skiathos has 65 beaches and direct international flights. Both work for 3-4 day couple escapes.
The most romantic experiences in Greece
- Cape Sounion sunset. Temple of Poseidon at golden hour. Lord Byron carved his name in a column. The cliff drops 60m to the sea. Few experiences feel as ancient.
- Caldera-edge dinner in Santorini. 1864 Restaurant in Imerovigli or La Maltese in Oia. Time it for sunset. The bill will be €120-200 for two. Worth every euro for the right occasion.
- Private catamaran sunset cruise. Around the Santorini caldera, with dinner on board. €120-180/person on shared cruises, €600-1,200 private for two. The sunset on the water beats the village viewpoint by far.
- Acropolis at sunset, dinner with Acropolis view. Athens. Book the 5 PM Acropolis time slot. Walk down through Plaka. Dinner at Strofi or Dionysos with the lit-up rock above you.
- Hydra evening walk. No cars. Donkeys delivering goods. Stone alleys. Tavernas spilling onto the harbor. Hydra at night is one of Greece's most romantic atmospheres.
- Overnight in a cave hotel. Real cave suites in Santorini are dug into the cliff. Private plunge pool with caldera view. Worth it for one or two nights.
- Wine tasting in Santorini's Assyrtiko region. Domaine Sigalas, Estate Argyros, Domaine Hatzidakis. Lunch at a winery overlooking the vineyards. Volcanic soil produces wine you've never tasted before.
