Skiathos.
Greece's green island.

Forget the Cyclades cliché. Skiathos has pine forests running down to white-sand beaches, calm shallow water, and a feel that's more Italian Riviera than postcard Aegean.

Why I love Skiathos for families.

I have clients who tried Mykonos with kids in 2018 and never came back. They went to Skiathos instead and now they bring grandkids. The combination of shallow protected water, easy parking, short flights, and zero pretension just works for families.

Koukounaries Beach is special. 1km of fine white sand, water you can walk in for 50m before it's knee-deep, pine forest behind for shade. There's no developed strip — just hotels behind the trees and family tavernas. Greek families have been coming here since the 60s.

For couples and active travelers, base in Skiathos Town and take a different boat each day. Lalaria Beach (only accessible by boat, white pebbles, dramatic cliffs), Kanapitsa, Mandraki. Or rent a scooter and explore the 60+ beaches at your own pace. The island is small enough that you can see it all in a week.

Common questions

Is Skiathos worth it vs the Cyclades?

Different trip entirely. Skiathos is greener, less iconic, more relaxed. Better for families and couples wanting beach over Instagram. Worse if you want the white-cube-on-blue-Aegean photo. We send people who tell us "we want the calmest island that still has good restaurants and nightlife."

Ferry or flight?

Both available. Ferry from Volos or Agios Konstantinos (we transfer you from Athens to the port — 3h drive). Flight: Athens-Skiathos is 40 min on Sky Express. Flight is easier; ferry is cheaper for groups.

Best beaches?

Koukounaries for families (long sand). Lalaria for the photo (white pebbles, only by boat). Mandraki for the away-from-it-all feel. Banana Beach for clothing-optional and a younger crowd.

When to visit?

June-September. May is cool. October-April most things close (it's a true seasonal island). Peak July-August is busy but not Mykonos-busy.

Mamma Mia connection?

The film was shot here. The chapel scene was filmed at Agios Ioannis sto Kastri. Pier-jump scene was at Skopelos (next island). We can do the Mamma Mia tour by boat if you want it.

Combine with other Sporades?

Yes — Skiathos + Skopelos (more remote, the actual Mamma Mia island) is a great combo. 1h ferry between. Or add 2 days in Pelion (mainland Greek mountain region with stone villages and beaches) before flying out.
