Zakynthos (Zante) is the Ionian island with Navagio Beach — that famous photo of a shipwreck on white sand surrounded by limestone cliffs that everyone has seen. Plus: Blue Caves, sea turtles, Italian-Venetian heritage, and a young party scene in Laganas. Mixed Greek paradise.
Beach photography, families (away from Laganas), youth/party travelers (in Laganas), sea-turtle enthusiasts
May–October. Peak: July-August. Sweet spot: June, September.
4–6 days
Ionian beach paradise + party town + sea turtle sanctuary
Zakynthos (often called Zante) is in the Ionian Sea, off Greece's western coast. It's most famous for one place: Navagio Beach, also called Shipwreck Beach. A 1980s smuggler's ship ran aground on a remote white-sand cove surrounded by 200-meter limestone cliffs. The photo of the shipwreck on the white sand is one of the most-shared travel images in the world.
Beyond Navagio, Zakynthos has the Blue Caves (sea caves where light reflects off white limestone making the water glow blue), the National Marine Park (where loggerhead sea turtles nest), and Italian-Venetian colonial architecture in Zakynthos Town. The interior is mountainous and forested, full of olive groves and small villages.
Zakynthos has a split personality. Laganas (south coast) is party central — British 18-30 travelers, beach clubs, late nights. The rest of the island is family-friendly Ionian beaches and quiet villages. You choose your Zakynthos based on accommodation location.
Boat tour to the famous beach. Cliff viewpoint from above is also accessible by car. The most photographed beach in Greece.
Sea caves on the north coast. Boat tours go inside — the water glows blue from light reflection. Half-day tour combined with Navagio.
Loggerhead turtles nest on Gerakas Beach and others. Guided eco-tours. May-October nesting season.
Italian-Venetian capital. Solomos Square, the old port, Venetian Castle on the hill. Half day.
Above Zakynthos Town. Views over the entire eastern coast. Locals come for sunset.
Drive into the interior — Volimes (lace-making village), Mariès, Anafonitria. Quieter, real Zakynthos.
Fly: Athens to Zakynthos: 1 hour, €60-110. Many seasonal direct international flights (UK, Germany, Scandinavia, Italy).
Ferry from Kyllini (Peloponnese): 1 hour ferry, frequent in summer. Drive 4 hours from Athens to Kyllini, then ferry. Useful if combining with Olympia or Peloponnese mainland tour.
Ferry from Kefalonia: 1.5 hours, useful for combining the two Ionian islands.
If you want the photograph: yes, absolutely. The boat tour to Navagio is 4-5 hours, costs €25-40 per person, and gives you 30-45 minutes on the actual beach plus the Blue Caves. The cliff viewpoint above the beach is also accessible — fewer crowds, better photo angle, accessible by car or organized tour.
Ionian (west coast Greek islands) is different from Cycladic (Aegean). Ionian islands have lush green vegetation, Italian-Venetian heritage, sandy beaches with white limestone backdrop. The colors are softer than the stark white-and-blue of Mykonos/Santorini. Zakynthos specifically has the famous Navagio Beach which is unique to it.
Depends on your trip. Laganas is loud, crowded, party-focused — like Magaluf or Ayia Napa. Great if that's what you're looking for, terrible otherwise. Family travelers should base in Tsilivi (north of Zakynthos Town), Vassilikos peninsula (southeast), or Alikes (north coast). Basing in Laganas accidentally is a common mistake.
May-October. Loggerhead turtles nest on Gerakas Beach and others May-July. Eggs hatch July-October. Eco-tours operate from boats — never approach turtles or nests on your own. The National Marine Park enforces strict protection.
Different vibe. Kefalonia is bigger, more dramatic landscape, less developed for tourism. Zakynthos is smaller, more famous (because of Navagio), more developed (especially Laganas). Both are beautiful. Zakynthos for the iconic shipwreck photo. Kefalonia for the quieter, more authentic Ionian experience.
