Greece visa requirements, explained.

Most travelers don't need a visa to visit Greece. Some do. The new ETIAS system (launching mid-2026) adds a small step for travelers who previously didn't need anything. Here's the complete breakdown by passport.

Who does NOT need a visa for Greece (short stays under 90 days)

Greece is a Schengen Area country. The following passport holders can enter visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period:

ETIAS — the new system starting mid-2026

From mid-2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) before visiting Greece (and any Schengen country). This is NOT a visa — it's an automated travel authorization, similar to the US ESTA system.

FAQs

Do Americans need a visa for Greece in 2026?+

Not a traditional visa, no. From mid-2026, Americans will need to apply for ETIAS authorization (€7, 10 minutes, valid 3 years) before traveling. This is automated and approved quickly. Before mid-2026, no application required at all.

How long can I stay in Greece without a visa?+

90 days within any 180-day period for visa-exempt nationalities (USA, Canada, UK, Australia, etc.). The 180-day calculation is rolling — your last 180 days at any point in time can include max 90 days in Schengen. EU citizens have no limit.

Can I extend my Greek tourist visa?+

Generally no, except in emergencies (medical, force majeure). Apply at the local police 'Aliens Bureau' before your 90 days expire. Extensions typically granted for 30-60 days for documented emergencies.

What's the difference between Schengen visa and Greek tourist visa?+

Greece is part of the Schengen Area. There's no separate 'Greek tourist visa' — when you apply at a Greek embassy, you receive a Schengen visa that's valid for travel throughout the Schengen Area (most of Europe). Apply at the embassy of your main destination (or the country you'll spend most time in).

How early should I apply for a Schengen visa?+

Apply 4-8 weeks before travel. Schengen visas can be applied for up to 6 months in advance and no later than 15 days before travel. Summer applications (May-August) take longer due to high volume. December-February is fastest.
