Greek VAT refunds: €7-9 back on every €50 spent.

Non-EU tourists can claim a refund of Greek VAT (24%) on most purchases. The refund is roughly 13-16% of the purchase price (less than 24% because the refund processor takes a cut). Here's the process.

Who's eligible for VAT refund

Non-EU residents only. UK travelers (post-Brexit) are eligible. EU residents are NOT eligible. You must be exporting the goods within 3 months of purchase.

What qualifies

The 4-step process

  1. At the shop: Tell the cashier you want a tax-free form ("Global Blue" is most common, "Planet" is the alternative). Show your passport. Get a printed form attached to the receipt.
  2. At Athens airport (before checking in): Go to the customs desk in the departure hall. Show passport, ticket, original receipt, AND the unused goods. Get the form stamped. NOTE: Do this BEFORE checking baggage if items are in checked luggage.
  3. Get your refund: After security, find the Global Blue (or Planet) refund desk. Hand in stamped forms. Choose: cash refund (3% fee, paid in EUR) or credit-card refund (no fee, takes 3-6 weeks).
  4. Confirmation: Keep the receipt of submission. If you don't get the credit-card refund within 6 weeks, contact Global Blue with your reference number.

Frequently asked.

How much VAT will I actually get back?+

Greek VAT is 24%. Refund processors (Global Blue, Planet) take 8-10% as their fee. Net refund: typically 13-16% of purchase price. €100 purchase = roughly €13-16 refund.

Where exactly do I do this at the airport?+

At Athens International Airport (ATH), the customs desk is in the departure hall on the upper level, near the check-in counters. The Global Blue refund desk is past security in the duty-free area.

How early should I arrive for tax refund?+

Add 30-45 minutes to your normal arrival time. The customs queue can be 15-30 minutes during peak hours. Arrive 3 hours before your flight if claiming significant refunds.

Can I get tax refund on Santorini wine?+

Yes — alcohol is eligible if over €50 single purchase. But wine in checked luggage: get the customs stamp BEFORE checking the bag. Wine in carry-on: get stamp at airport, but quantity is limited by liquid restrictions.

What if I lose the tax-free form?+

You don't get the refund. Keep tax-free forms in a safe place separate from your passport. Some shops can reissue but only if you return to the shop with original receipt.
