When Easter falls in 2026 and 2027
2026: Greek Orthodox Easter is April 12. Holy Week April 6-12. Easter Monday April 13.
2027: Easter is May 2. Holy Week April 26 – May 2.
Greek Orthodox Easter follows a different calendar than Catholic/Protestant Easter — typically falling 1-5 weeks later. The dates change each year.
What happens during Holy Week
- Holy Monday-Wednesday: Decorations go up in cities. Churches start special services. Tavernas serve Lenten (vegan) menus. Atmosphere of anticipation.
- Holy Thursday: Eggs are dyed red. Tsoureki (sweet bread with red egg) baked. First major mass.
- Good Friday: Most museums and shops close. Procession of the Epitafios (icon of Christ's tomb) through streets at evening. Quiet, somber, beautiful.
- Holy Saturday: Major shops closed. Midnight: candlelit Resurrection service in every Greek Orthodox church. Fireworks at midnight. Greeks return home with lit candles.
- Easter Sunday: Whole roasted lamb (or goat). Family lunch lasting 4-6 hours. Most restaurants closed.
- Easter Monday: National holiday. Most things still closed. Beach picnics if weather is good.
Travel impact — should you visit during Easter?
If you're a cultural traveler: Yes, time your trip around Easter. The midnight Resurrection service (Holy Saturday) with candles in every village square is one of Europe's most authentic religious moments. Stay in a smaller village (not Athens) for the full experience.
If you're a museum/sites traveler: Avoid Holy Friday-Easter Monday. Most major sites and museums close. The week after Easter is quiet and lovely.
If you're an island-hopping traveler: Ferries are oversold for Athenians returning home. Book 4+ weeks ahead. Hotels at peak rates. Plan around it.
