How Viator actually works
Viator (owned by TripAdvisor since 2014) is a tour reseller. They don't operate any tours. Every tour you book on Viator is run by a local supplier — a Greek tour company, a bus operator, a guide.
The economic flow:
- Local supplier sets a wholesale price — say €70 for a Meteora day trip.
- Viator marks this up 25-30% to cover their commission. Now €87-91.
- Viator's listed retail price is €115-130 for the same tour.
- When you book, Viator takes their commission. The supplier gets €70.
- You paid €115. The supplier earned €70. The €45 difference went to Viator's marketing budget.
This isn't unusual — it's the entire OTA business model. GetYourGuide works identically. Klook works identically. TripAdvisor's "experiences" tab is owned by Viator. Booking.com's "things to do" is white-labeled GetYourGuide. The marketplace structure dominates online tour booking.
How Trips From Athens differs
We're a direct connection. Stelios has worked in Greek travel since 2001 and has direct supplier relationships with the same tour operators Viator uses. When you book through us, we charge supplier wholesale + 8-12% margin (instead of Viator's 25-30%).
The same Meteora day trip:
- Local supplier wholesale: €70
- Viator retail: €115-130
- Trips From Athens retail: €78
- You save €37-52 per person
Same exact tour. Same supplier. Same bus. Same driver. Same archaeologist guide. Lower price because we don't have Viator's marketing overhead built into our pricing.
When Viator is actually fine
We're not anti-Viator universally. Their interface is good. Their reviews system is helpful. For travelers who don't want to message a real human and just want to click-and-book, Viator works.
Use Viator when:
- You're booking a single small activity and don't want to message anyone.
- You want the absolute simplest booking experience and don't mind paying 25-30% markup.
- You want to see hundreds of options across all destinations in one app.
Skip Viator when:
- You're booking multiple tours (the per-tour markup adds up to hundreds of euros).
- You want a custom or modified itinerary (Viator only offers standardized packages).
- You want recommendations specific to your travel dates or group.
- You want a real person to handle issues if something goes wrong.
