Winter hotel pricing — pay attention
- Athens 5-star (NJV Plaza, Hilton, Grand Bretagne): €180-300 winter vs €350-600 peak. Same hotel, half-price.
- Athens 4-star Plaka: €70-110 winter vs €180-250 peak.
- Crete 4-star: €55-90 winter vs €180-250 peak. (Many hotels close completely December-February — verify.)
- Acropolis ticket: €10 November-March vs €20 April-October.
Winter activities you can't do in summer
- Skiing: Arachova (1.5 hours from Athens, near Delphi) has Mt Parnassus ski resort — open December through March/April depending on snow.
- Christmas in Athens: Syntagma Square Christmas tree, Plaka decorations, mulled wine bars, the most romantic time in the city.
- Carnival (Apokries): Three weeks before Lent (Feb-March). Patras has the biggest celebration. Streets full of costumes and parties.
- Empty archaeological sites: Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia with five other tourists instead of five thousand.
- Real Greek winter cuisine: Slow-cooked beef stews, baked feta, hot soups. Tourist-summer menus disappear; real food returns.
- Greek almond and cherry blossoms: February in the Peloponnese, March in central Greece. Spectacular.
