April weather, honestly
Athens averages 12-22°C in April. Daytime is shirt-sleeve weather. Evenings drop to 11-14°C — pack a sweater. Rain is more frequent than May (5-7 rainy days vs 2). The sea is 16-18°C — only Northern European-trained swimmers will enjoy it.
Islands run 1-2°C cooler than Athens. Crete and Rhodes (the southernmost islands) are warmer — 14-23°C, occasional 25°C days. The Cyclades feel windy and crisp. The mainland mountains (Meteora, Delphi area) can still be cold at night.
Greek Easter — the country's biggest event
In 2026 Greek Orthodox Easter falls on April 12. Easter is to Greece what Christmas is to the UK or US — bigger than any tourist holiday, family-centered, intensely cultural. Megalonisi (the week leading up to Easter) is the most beautiful week of the year in Greek villages.
If your dates align: witness it. Holy Saturday midnight services with candlelit processions. Easter Sunday's roasted lamb feasts. Red-dyed eggs. The greeting "Christos Anesti" (Christ is risen) repeated everywhere. It's spectacular, communal, and entirely real.
If you don't want crowds: avoid Easter weekend itself. Athenians flee to villages, ferries are oversold, prices spike, museums and shops close Friday-Sunday. The week after Easter is post-festival cleanup mode and surprisingly quiet.
