The Cyclades — what they are
The Cyclades are the cluster of 220 islands (24 inhabited) in the central Aegean, southeast of Athens. The famous ones: Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Milos, Ios, Sifnos, Folegandros, Syros, Tinos.
The Cyclades aesthetic: Whitewashed cube houses with blue domes. Narrow stone alleys. Bougainvillea cascading down walls. Steep cliffs above turquoise water. The "Greek island" image is specifically Cycladic.
Best for: First-time Greek travelers, photographers, honeymooners, beach-and-village experience, ferry-hopping multiple islands.
The Dodecanese — what they are
The Dodecanese are the 15 inhabited islands of the southeastern Aegean, between Greek Crete and Turkish Anatolia. Famous ones: Rhodes, Kos, Patmos, Karpathos, Symi, Kalymnos, Tilos.
The Dodecanese aesthetic: Mixed. Rhodes Old Town is medieval crusader fortress (UNESCO). Symi is pastel-painted neoclassical. Kos has Italian colonial architecture from when Italy held the islands 1912-1947. Patmos has the Cave of the Apocalypse (where John of Patmos wrote Revelation). Less unified than Cyclades.
Best for: Repeat Greek visitors, history enthusiasts (medieval and Byzantine layers), travelers wanting fewer crowds than Cyclades, longer beach seasons (Dodecanese stays warmer longer).
Pick the Cyclades if...
- First Greek trip — the Cyclades are what people picture as "Greek islands."
- Honeymoon — Santorini and Milos deliver iconic romance.
- Easy ferry connections from Athens (Cyclades are closer).
- You want the whitewashed-village aesthetic specifically.
Pick the Dodecanese if...
- You've already done the Cyclades.
- Medieval/Byzantine history excites you (Rhodes Old Town).
- You're combining Greece with Turkey (ferries connect Dodecanese to Turkish coast).
- You want longer beach season (Dodecanese stays warmer into October).
- You want fewer crowds — Dodecanese gets ~30% the international tourists Cyclades does.
Logistics differences
From Athens: Cyclades by ferry — Santorini 3-7 hours, Mykonos 2.5-5 hours, Paros 2-3 hours. Dodecanese mostly by flight — Rhodes 50 min flight, Kos 50 min flight, Patmos accessible only by ferry from Piraeus (8-9 hours overnight).
Inter-island ferries: Cyclades have well-connected daily ferries between major islands. Dodecanese have less-frequent inter-island ferries; some connections require multi-stop routes.
From international airports: Cyclades — most international travelers fly into Athens, then ferry/fly to islands. Dodecanese — Rhodes has direct international flights from many European cities (advantage for European travelers).
