Voula and Vouliagmeni are the premium end of the Athens Riviera. Better beaches than Glyfada. More established. Astir Beach (the legendary 1960s peninsula resort) is here. Lake Vouliagmeni (a thermal lake to swim in). Premium seafood. The Greek shipping families' weekend houses.
South of Glyfada along the Athens coast, 22-25 km from city center
Athens Riviera VIP, premium beach
Luxury travelers, beach club enthusiasts, families wanting premium beach access
Voula and Vouliagmeni are technically two adjacent municipalities, but they function as one premium-coastal stretch. The coast curves around small peninsulas and bays. The water is cleaner and clearer than Glyfada. The vibe is quieter and richer.
Astir Beach Resort is the area's icon. The 1960s peninsula resort hosted Hollywood and Greek shipping families. Today it's three luxury hotels (W, Four Seasons, Westin) on a private peninsula with three beach clubs, three Michelin-mentioned restaurants, and the Astir bungalows that defined Athens Riviera glamour.
Beyond Astir, Lake Vouliagmeni is unique — a salt lake fed by underground hot springs, year-round 22-29°C water, naturally therapeutic. Greeks come for the warm winter swim. Tourists rarely find it.
Nobu's Athens outpost, in the Astir Resort. Sushi at Mediterranean prices (€90-150/person). Sea-view tables.
Premium fish restaurant on the Vouliagmeni coast. Chef Christoforos Peskias. Reservation essential.
Day pass €100-200. Private beach, two pools, three restaurants. The 1960s glamour template.
Old-school fish taverna, run by the same family since the 70s. The non-luxury alternative.
Beachfront cafe-restaurant. The post-swim ice cream and sunset coffee spot.
The premium hotels: Four Seasons Astir Palace (€600-1,800/night), Westin Astir (€400-900), W Athens (€350-650), Divani Apollon Palace in Vouliagmeni (€280-500). All have private beach access.
Mid-range options exist: Cape Sounio adjacent properties, smaller boutiques along the coast. €150-250/night. But the Voula-Vouliagmeni proposition is the luxury beach experience — if you want budget Athens, this isn't the place.
Best for: 7+ day Athens trips with a beach component, luxury travelers, families wanting premium beach access, honeymooners who want both Athens and beach without flying to islands.
The classic Athens Riviera experience. Day pass at the resort beach. Lunch at one of three beach restaurants.
Year-round 22-29°C water. Naturally therapeutic. €10-12 entrance. Cafe on site.
From Vouliagmeni, the coastal road to Cape Sounion is 35 km, 45 min. Most beautiful drive in Attica.
Smaller, quieter than Glyfada Marina. Yachts, sunset, cocktails on the water.
If you want a beach component to your Athens trip, yes — these are the best Athens-area beaches. 25-35 minutes by car or tram from central Athens. Doable for daily commute, but better as a multi-night base.
Glyfada is more urban (shopping, restaurants, families), Voula-Vouliagmeni is more luxury-resort-focused. Glyfada has free public beaches; Voula-Vouliagmeni's premium beach (Astir) requires day pass or hotel guest status.
Yes, year-round. The lake is naturally heated by underground hot springs (22-29°C all year). Mineral content is therapeutic — Greeks visit for skin conditions. Small fish gently nibble dead skin off your feet.
If you want the legendary Astir experience, yes. €100-200 includes sun beds, towels, pool access, and you can use the resort restaurants. For just swimming, public beaches in Voula are free. Astir is for the experience.
