Uber vs Free Now vs Yellow Taxi in Athens.

In Athens, Uber doesn't have its own drivers — it uses licensed yellow taxi drivers via the app. Free Now does the same. So your three 'options' are actually the same drivers, three different ways to hail them. The real question: which app gives you the best experience?

The setup in Athens

Greek law restricts ride-hailing apps from operating without licensed taxi drivers. The result: Uber, Free Now, and Bolt all connect you with the same yellow taxi drivers you'd see on the street. The driver pulls up in a yellow Athens taxi.

What changes with the app: payment method, fixed price (sometimes), GPS tracking, English-language receipt. What doesn't change: the driver, the car, the route.

When to use each

Use Free Now when: You want the easiest experience. Largest fleet of any app in Athens. Fixed price quoted upfront. Pay by app. English receipt. Best for tourists.

Use Uber when: You're already an Uber user. Same as Free Now but smaller fleet — sometimes longer wait times. Same drivers, same cars.

Use Bolt when: You want the cheapest fare. Slightly cheaper than Free Now and Uber due to lower commission. But: smallest fleet, longest wait times. Best for off-peak travel.

Use a street-hailed yellow taxi when: You're in a busy area at peak hours (apps may have surge pricing). Or you're outside an area with apps. ALWAYS insist on the meter — flat-rate quotes are usually overpriced.

How much should rides cost?

Within Athens central area (Plaka, Koukaki, Kolonaki, Pangrati): €5–€10 per ride.

Athens centre to Glyfada (Athens Riviera): €15–€20.

Athens centre to Piraeus (port): €15–€22.

Athens centre to airport: €40 daytime flat (€55 night).

Athens centre to Cape Sounion: €60–€80 one way (better as a day trip from us).

Apps usually quote €1–€3 more than the meter would charge — that's the convenience fee. Worth it for tourists.

FAQs

Is Uber actually available in Athens?+

Yes, but it's Uber-via-yellow-taxi-drivers (not UberX with private cars). Greek law requires ride-hailing apps to use licensed taxi drivers. So your Uber driver in Athens drives a yellow taxi.

Should I trust street-hailed yellow taxis?+

Mostly yes, but always insist on the meter. The 'broken meter' scam exists, especially around tourist areas and the airport. Refuse any driver who quotes a flat rate — say 'meter, please' or walk to the next taxi.

Are tips expected?+

Greek taxis don't expect tips. Round up to the nearest €1 (so €7.40 becomes €8) for short rides. Drivers don't expect 15-20% American-style tipping.

Do drivers speak English?+

Most Athens drivers speak basic English. Apps remove this issue — you input destination on the app, no conversation needed.

Can I pay by card in Athens taxis?+

Apps: yes (you pay through the app). Street-hailed taxis: increasingly yes (most have card terminals now). But cash is still preferred. Always have €10-20 in euros for taxi rides.
