Thissio is where Athens walks at sunset. The pedestrian street Apostolou Pavlou runs along the side of the Acropolis — for a kilometer, you have an unobstructed view of the rock. Cafes line the street. Locals stroll. Tourists discover it. The most romantic 30 minutes in Athens.
Northwest of the Acropolis, along the pedestrianized Apostolou Pavlou street
Acropolis-view promenade, evening walking
Anyone wanting the most beautiful evening walk in Athens
In 2002, Athens pedestrianized a 1.5 km stretch of street that runs along the western base of the Acropolis. From Hadrian's Arch in the south to Thissio metro station in the north, it became one connected walking route past most of central Athens's archaeological sites.
Thissio is the northern half of this walk — specifically Apostolou Pavlou Street, which curves around the Acropolis at the perfect angle. You walk and the Parthenon stays in your sight, slowly rotating as you move. At sunset, the marble turns gold-pink. The Temple of Hephaestus (in the Ancient Agora) appears below. Tourists, locals, lovers, dog walkers all do this walk every evening.
Thissio also has cafes, bars, and the Thission Cinema (an open-air summer cinema with the Acropolis as its backdrop — one of the best urban experiences in Europe). The metro station here connects to Piraeus on one direction and Plaka/Monastiraki on the other.
Cafe-bar with the best Acropolis view tables in Athens. Mid-range prices, premium location.
Open-air summer cinema. €8 ticket. Watch a movie with the Acropolis above the screen. Unbeatable.

Local cafe at the quieter end of Apostolou Pavlou. Where the dog walkers stop.
Thissio has a few boutique hotels with Acropolis views, but most travelers stay in Plaka or Koukaki and walk to Thissio. The walking distance is short — 10 minutes from Monastiraki, 15-20 from Plaka or Koukaki.
If you want to stay specifically in Thissio: Phidias Hotel, Acropolis View Hotel. €100-180/night. The 'view' hotels charge a premium but the views are real (you can watch sunrise on the Acropolis from your balcony).
